Testosterone is a hormone secreted by the male hormone and responsible for the sexual characteristic of men. In males, testosterone plays an important part in the creation of male sexual characteristics including male reproductive organs like penis and testes and also promoting secondary sexual characteristics like increased bone and muscle mass, and increased body hair. The role of testosterone in the human body has become very famous because of its many functions. It is responsible for growth of muscles, regeneration of cells, reduces fat, helps to build and repair wounds, facilitates the development and maturation of sperm, governs sexual differentiation of the male and female sex organs, and influences the behavior and health of the male hormone.


There are many causes for the deficiency or low levels of testosterone in our bodies. One of the commonest causes of deficiency in testosterone is external aggression, stress, medication, aging, chemotherapy, anemia, obesity, hypothyroidism and polycystic ovarian syndrome. The use of testosterone therapy to treat hypogonadism is considered safe. However, there are some potential risks involved in its use. There is a possibility of growth hormone release syndrome, testicular rupture of implants. There is also a danger of premature ejaculation, depression, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, impotence and sexual dysfunction. In addition, the use of testosterone therapy may have certain negative consequences on sexual health such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.

Men suffering from pituitary adenoma should not undergo testosterone therapy. Pregnant women should avoid testosterone therapy if their menopause symptoms are accompanied by abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, headaches, hot flashes, vaginal dryness or painful sex during the early part of pregnancy. Pregnant women must seek the advice of their gynecologist instead of trying to treat symptoms themselves. A doctor can properly diagnose the cause of symptoms associated with hypogonadism and prescribe proper treatment for the condition.
